In 2022, we brought together experts to review the State of Black Tacoma to lay out the GAINS, GAPS, and OPPORTUNITIES for GROWTH for our Black community. Together, we looked for examples of success and guidance on how to take action in areas such as housing, civic engagement, healthcare, education and more. Small Business Development
Jenefeness Tucker, VP of Community Relationships and Public Affairs at Seattle Credit Union, describes how sharing resources and knowledge has increased successes for Black Business Owners. She shares how people are creating access and leaning into community connection to tear down systemic barriers for Black Businesses.
Civic Engagement
Julie Anderson, Pierce County Auditor, describes how Tacoma led a high turn-out rate for the 2020 census, ensuring that our region is accurately represented. She also shares an analysis of Black voter engagement, as well as efforts to protect and improve voting rights and access.
Education
Dr. Tafona Ervin, Executive Director of Graduate Tacoma, shares an analysis of the connection between education and economic mobility. She celebrates successes such as increased highschool graduation rates, and shares opportunities for continued growth.
Employment
Katie Condit, CEO of Workforce Central, shares how workforce development is being led by and for Black communities. She describes continued systemic challenges and disparities in employment access in Tacoma, and what people are doing at all levels to improve access.
Healthcare
Dr. Jamila Sherls-Jones, Director of Immunization at the Washington State Department of Health and former Director of Health Equity at MultiCare, shares gains and gaps in Black health, as well as opportunities to support health equity as a community.
Housing
Felicia Medlen, Housing Division Manager at the City of Tacoma, shares an analysis of the impact of housing on the quality of Black life in Tacoma. She describes the barriers to homeownership for the Black community and offers some paths forward towards increased access and prosperity.
