Health
Health is more than treating sickness.
We work to increase health literacy in our health systems and communities.
The Tacoma Urban League helps build well-being by working with families, churches, civic groups, service providers, and the health ecosystem to ensure families have the resources they need to thrive. Our approach combines education, services from pregnancy through adulthood, and advocacy to develop a health ecosystem that generates well-being.
Together, our health programs aim to:
Improve maternal and child health outcomes of African Americans in Tacoma-Pierce County.
Expand high-quality, culturally responsive, and affordable health care access for Black Tacomans and other communities society oppresses.
Programs
Being the Village
Being the Village is a support system for Black mothers and mothers of color who often feel isolated, ignored, and overwhelmed. We curate a virtual and in-person space every Thursday at 11 AM to be human, perfectly flawed, and figure this motherhood thing out - together.

Leaders in Women’s Health
Leaders in Women’s Health is a group of dedicated volunteers deeply committed to changing the narrative for Black/African American women regarding Breast Health outcomes. We strategize with other community organizations to identify and address barriers to care, provide training, education, and outreach that supports early detection. We strive to reach underserved populations to provide access to life saving breast cancer screenings. We meet at 8am on the second Wednesday of each month virtually through Facebook live streams and in person at Tacoma Urban League
